It’s once again time for patients and their families to receive their annual influenza vaccine. Some will combine it with another service, while others will visit you solely for the vaccine. Keep the following in mind during the upcoming season:

It is important to know the specific vaccine product being ordered and administered in your office. Also, be sure the patient meets the age requirement for any vaccine being administered.

Code descriptors in Table 1 are listed as quadrivalent or trivalent to differentiate the products. Remember to verify with your local Medicaid payer to determine how to code for the vaccines administered through the Vaccines for Children program, as reporting can vary. The variation may include only reporting vaccine administration codes or only reporting the product code to receive payment for the administration. Often, the state requires modifier SL (state supplied vaccine) to be appended to the appropriate code(s).
