As fall approaches, coders anticipate the update to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM). The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) plays an active role in this update. (Learn more in “The Role of the AAP in the Official ICD-10-CM Process” later in this newsletter.)
For the 2020 ICD-10-CM update, the AAP sponsored proposals for a new travel counseling code to be used when a patient presents for travel-related counseling. This was in response to AAP membership noting a gap for these types of encounters. In addition, the AAP requested codes for the following scenarios:
Table 1 lists new codes with conditions that are likely to be found in pediatrics. They are listed by the condition or topic with its corresponding codes. Other than those already noted, of special note are new codes for congenital deformities of the feet, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and Prader-Willi syndrome.
