Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Current Procedural Terminology® and International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification code sets have been updated on an emergent basis when necessary to support reporting of conditions and services related to COVID-19. New diagnosis codes and procedure codes for laboratory testing services, vaccines, and immunization administration have been published and implemented in advance of regularly scheduled updates to the code sets.

In addition, on July 26, 2022, the American Medical Association announced immediate implementation of codes to support physicians and other health care providers reporting services related to emerging concerns associated with monkeypox and smallpox.
