Improving the Health of Children and Families Worldwide

August 2, 2024

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently launched its first-ever gold open access (OA) journal, Pediatrics Open Science. This new OA journal is designed to provide healthcare professionals and others who seek to improve child health unlimited access to high-quality, cutting-edge research articles that will enhance the health and well-being of children and families. As editor in chief of Pediatrics Open Science, I will uphold the rigorous editorial standards AAP journals are known for while bringing high-quality, impactful research from around the globe to the public and scientific community in a way that minimizes barriers to access.

Pediatrics Open Science's goal is to embrace the academic publishing trends of sharing medical research through a gold OA model that makes all published articles easily available for reading, downloading, and sharing. Equitable access to scientific findings globally is at the very heart of the AAP’s publishing model, and many governments and funding bodies now require open access publishing.

My editorial team and I are looking for original research articles and research briefs that advance our mission of improving child health worldwide. We are a general journal devoted to improving the health of children and families, so we will publish articles related to any topics that address this mission. Examples include studies that

  • address or help gain a better understanding of current or emerging issues (such as climate change) that affect child health, including for populations that are disproportionately impacted,
  • evaluate the effectiveness of new technologies (such as artificial intelligence) or treatments,
  • help improve the value and safety of health care delivered to children not only by implementing new practices but also decreasing waste in the system, or
  • address factors impacting the pediatric workforce, including the organization and finance of pediatric care, provider well-being, and how pediatric providers are trained and continually educated.

As a gold OA journal, Pediatrics Open Science has an article publishing charge (APC) that covers the cost of the editorial team, the manuscript submission system, production (e.g., copyediting, typesetting), distribution, marketing, and archiving. The APC is only charged after an article has successfully gone through peer review and been accepted for publication.

To help introduce our journal to the pediatric community, we are waiving the APC through the end of 2024 to encourage all authors to submit their research to the newest member of the AAP family of journals.

Looking long term, we also have an APC waiver policy in place for authors from low- and lower-middle-income countries. The AAP is committed to promoting equitable access to scientific publishing and does not want the APC to be a barrier for any author group looking to get their research published in a reputable journal.

Ensure your research reaches its full potential by publishing open access. Submit your research to Pediatrics Open Science today.
