Meet the Editor: John Patrick T. Co, MD, MPH, MBA, FAAP

October 18, 2024

What is your role with Pediatrics Open Science, the new open access journal from the American Academy of Pediatrics?

Editor in Chief

What made you want to pursue a leadership role in journal publishing?

I love learning about all the great ways that people are trying to improve the health and lives of children and families and know how important it is for others to learn from effective, impactful approaches. Scientific writing has not come easy for me. I hope my role in publishing pays forward what I’ve learned from so many others.

What are your primary research interests?

Medical education, healthcare quality, safety, and operations, health equity, informatics

What excites you about the field of pediatrics?

Children bring the world such joy on so many levels, including through their innocence and potential. They are both our present and our future.

Do you have any words of wisdom for future researchers?

Critically assess the areas you decide to focus on, the projects you take on, and most importantly the mentor(s) you choose.

Why do you think open access is important for the future of pediatric research?

Open access has the potential to ensure information is shared rapidly and equitably.

What does a typical day in your work week look like?

I work with others on my team and throughout my institution to optimize how we deliver graduate medical education in my health system (Mass General Brigham). This includes attending and leading committees related to education, quality and safety, equity, and inclusion, leading the GME Office, and meeting with program directors and trainees to serve the mission. My work with Pediatrics Open Science occurs predominantly during nights and weekends, except for meetings with our Executive Editorial Board.
