Our journal and others have published a number of studies over the past few years regarding the potential benefits of probiotics in preventing or treating a number of newborn conditions such as necrotizing enterocolitis. This week, Rao et al. (10.1542/peds.2015-3684) are sharing the results of a meta-analysis in our journal that looks at the role of probiotic supplementation in preventing and/or treating late-onset sepsis.

A prior review of 19 studies done two years ago had not found benefits of their use in reducing the risk, but this article updates the prior one by analyzing 37 randomized controlled trials of probiotics in more than 9000 preterm babies at risk for late onset sepsis and the results are extremely convincing. Is your neonatal intensive care unit using probiotics to reduce the risk of late onset sepsis? If not, you may want to have that discussion with your neonatologists after reading this systematic review and meta-analysis promoting probiotic usage in preterm infants at risk for this serious illness.
