We thank Dr Luke for his comments regarding our recent article. He and his colleagues are to be applauded for their efforts to reduce injuries among a high-injury-risk group (15- to 18-year-olds) by placing greater restrictions on foul play than those outlined by USA Hockey. Unfortunately, the statistics provided by Dr Luke are not enough to support the claim that the number of hockey-related injuries has been significantly reduced in their league players. He cited the number of injuries and body parts injured in 1 season only (2003–2004 season). Without a comparison of injury rates before and after their implementation of greater restrictions on foul play, he is unable to prove the effectiveness of this initiative in preventing injuries among players.

Dr Luke's statement that the injury rate per 1000 player-hours in their league (8.668 injuries per 1000 player-hours) is far less than the published rates...
