Evaluation of a Comprehensive, Community-based Wellness Program for Children in Corpus Christi, Texas Background: Childhood obesity is a significant health issue in the United States, and is especially prevalent in Texas, ranking 6th nationwide. Historically, schools and pediatricians have focused on diet modifications to prevent excessive weight gain. Physical activity is mentioned, but is not usually the focus of weight-loss interventions. Kids Get Fit is a new fitness-based, not-for-profit program developed in our local area that incorporates fitness training, nutrition awareness, and motivation and goal setting. Objective: We intend to evaluate the program’s effectiveness in reducing obesity and its effects through a pilot study. Design/Methods: Children between 8 and 14 years of age with a body mass index above the 85th percentile were recruited.
