José Strauss, et al. recently cited two cases of status asthmaticus treated successfully with THAM. I wish to point out that during status the primary problem is one of adequate alveolar aeration. Respiratory acidosis can almost immediately be corrected if aeration is returned to normal.
Each of the two patients studied was given steroids, bronchodilators, intravenous fluids, and THAM. Both were out of serious trouble approximately 12 hours later.
