In April Dr. Robert Mendelsohn, Director of Consultation Services for Head Start, was asked to resign his post. The resignation request was made the day after he finished his testimony to the House Education and Labor Committee, where he criticized the atmosphere in many of the public schools which inhibits any real progress that might have been made in the Head Start program.

Although the exact reasons for his resignation request were never clear, the time of the request juxtaposed to his testimony suggests that the leadership of the American Academy of Pediatrics, who appointed him, now suddenly oppose his point of view.
