Woolley and Evans1 were among the first to report a series of children in whom abuse at the hands of adults led to serious bodily harm in the child. Since their paper, other authors2,3 have contributed articles attesting to this sad and ever present threat to the well-being of youngsters.

Child abuse, in a very subtle form, is encountered almost daily by the Pediatric Allergist when he sees children suffering from severe allergic rhinitis or asthma, in whom environmental allergens, such as household pets, play a prominent role.
