In well-baby care one not infrequently sees infants, usually 2 to 6 months of age, who have unilateral abduction of a foot. I would like to submit for your consideration and reader response one very simple yet often overlooked cause for this condition.
On close questioning of the mothers involved, I have found that they will hold their infant regularly to one side ("on my right hip" or "on my left hip") and consequently put pressure on one of the baby's lower extremities in such a way that abduction of that foot occurs.
