Dr. Barton Schmitt's article on school phobia is logically organized and well written. However, there is one fault. The author obviously has never heard of the allergic tension-fatigue syndrome which, in my experience, is a common cause of (1) vague physical symptoms, (2) normal physical and laboratory findings, and (3) poor school attendance.

I won't make this a long and detailed letter for three reasons: First, I know space in the Letters to the Editor section of Pediatrics is limited. Second, the typical clinical picture of the child with systemic manifestations due to allergy was presented in detail in this journal some years ago.
