Dr Farer and I have agreed on our mutual commitment to the eradication of tuberculosis in children. However, it is important that all avenues be utilized toward elimination of tuberculosis in the United States and two current actions of the United States Public Health Service have unintentionally served to minimize the seriousness of the problem. These actions are: (1) recommendation that routine use of the tuberculin test be discontinued and (2) official statistical counting methods that in large measure exclude the reporting of children with primary tuberculosis (III. Tuberculosis: Infected, with disease, lymphatic).
