I read with interest the article "Quantitative Noninvasive Method to Measure Cerebral Blood Flow in Newborn Infants" by F.A.N. Leahy et al (Pediatrics 64:277, 1979). Their method is severely limited by the fact that vertebral flow has been ignored. Using an electrical model we have been able to calculate this flow,1,2 and I have shown3 that any increase in cranial blood flow is accompanied by a rise in the proportion of blood drained by the vertebral system.
