To the Editor.—

I would like to comment on some information offered in the Committee on Drugs' policy statement, "Transfer of Drugs and Other Chemicals into Human Milk", published in the November 1989 issue of Pediatrics.1 Nicotine is listed as a drug of abuse that is contraindicated during breast-feeding, in the same category as cocaine, heroin, marijuana, phencyclidine 1-(-1-phenylcyclohexyl) piperidine, and amphetamines. Three references are listed; however, none of them provide any good evidence to support a statement with such wide-ranging implications.
