We appreciate the comments of Gielen et al on our study examining the risk of injuries to children in day care compared with the risks of injuries to children at home. Injury control, a problem ignored for far to long, is finally beginning to attract a sizeable number of investigators and practitioners. Nevertheless, resources are still extremely scarce, and we encourage others involved in this area to use criteria similar to those used at the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center in choosing a topic for intervention: the injuries must be frequent, they must be severe, and an effective intervention should exist.
