There are four studies published to date (the most recent is in Pediatrics. 1995;95:21-28) assessing the effect of adjunctive corticosteroid therapy on the outcome of pediatric bacterial meningitis that fulfill the following minimal design standard criteria: prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled; compared demographically-equivalent groups of patients with microbiologically-confirmed bacterial meningitis; administered a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic and either dexamethasone or placebo; evaluated neurologic and audiologic outcomes more than 6 weeks after hospital discharge.
