Pediatrics 75 Reflections: Kimberly Montez, MD, MPH

March 29, 2023

What’s your favorite part about being on the editorial board of Pediatrics?

Getting to work with Lewis First [editor in chief] and Alex Kemper [deputy editor] has been an absolute pleasure. Not only are they two of the smartest, most accomplished pediatricians, but they are kind, humble, and hilarious. Each call or meeting with them provides comic relief, from the back-and-forth banter to celebrating the national day calendar, I always leave with a positive outlook and am re-energized.

What have you learned while being a member of the editorial board?

As a member of the editorial board, I have become more familiar with the peer-review process, gaining an understanding of how articles are reviewed and evaluated for publication. By evaluating submissions for scientific rigor, validity, and impact, I have honed my ability to critically assess scientific research. I have also been privy to the latest research and advancements in the field of pediatrics.

Why did you want to join the editorial board?

I joined the editorial board to help guide the national pediatric research agenda around diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice from a scholarly perspective given my lived experience and expertise as a Spanish-speaking Latina. I also joined to learn from experts in the field, pursue opportunities for networking and collaboration, improve my own manuscript writing and reviewing skillset, and advance the quality of research and publications in the field of pediatrics.
