What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Family comes first. With every decision I make related to my career—taking on a project, travel, job—I think about the impact on my family and I prioritize them in decision-making.
What have you learned while being a member of the editorial board?
I have learned several things, but I’ll focus on what I’ve learned about leadership. Lewis First [editor in chief] and Alex Kemper [deputy editor] are open leaders who engage the full editorial board and journal staff in decision-making about the journal, and they consistently think about ways to innovate. This style of leadership doesn’t just make Pediatrics the high-impact journal that it is, but it allows everyone to feel part of the mission and process.
Why did you want to join the editorial board?
It was an honor to join the editorial board of Pediatrics, a journal that has published a substantial number of highly impactful articles, including AAP guidelines, that I use regularly to inform my clinical practice. It is a great privilege to be able to contribute, even in a small way, to the mission of Pediatrics and to learn from the many wonderful people who work hard to make the journal the success that it is.
