A planned approach to decreasing the child’s anxiety before, during, and after immunization and to decreasing pain from the injection is helpful for children of any age. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP),2 the Canadian Medical Association,3 and the World Health Organization4 provide guidance on a variety of pain mitigation interventions during vaccination. Parents, children 3 years and older, and health care providers administering vaccine injections should be educated about evidence-based techniques for reducing injection pain or distress. Combination vaccines should be used when feasible to reduce the number of injections and their attendant pain.
