A previously healthy, fully-vaccinated 11-month-old female presents to the emergency department with redness behind her right ear that was first noted earlier that morning. She has had 2 ear infections in the past 2 months which were treated with oral antibiotics. She has been fussy over the past 2 days with tactile fevers. On examination, the child is crying and appears to be in pain. She has tender swelling and redness over the post-auricular region with mild protrusion of the right auricle. The right tympanic membrane is erythematous and bulging. This child was born in Ohio, has not travelled internationally, and has no known exposures.
