About Addressing Mental Health Concerns in Pediatrics: A Practical Resource Toolkit for Clinicians, 2nd edition
Mental health concerns have moved to the forefront of our specialty’s attention as we, our patients, and their families face new challenges in the social, emotional, and behavioral realms. Caring for our patients’ mental health needs is no longer a single component of pediatrics. It is a necessary and integrated part of our daily practice.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Addressing Mental Health Concerns in Pediatrics: A Practical Resource Toolkit for Clinicians, 2nd Edition, provides comprehensive mental health guidance for professionals working with children, adolescents, and families. However, professionals also need quickly accessible tools for clinical practice: “What do I do right now, for this patient, right here at the point of care?”
This second edition of the toolkit provides tools to address those needs. It has been streamlined to an easily accessible online format, and it includes tools that you can download for immediate use in caring for patients with some of the most common mental health needs. It was created in alignment with the AAP recommended mental health competencies for pediatric practice (Pediatrics, November 2019).

About the ADHD Toolkit, Caring for Children With ADHD: A Practical Resource Toolkit for Clinicians, 3rd Edition
ADHD is estimated to affect 8% to 10% of the US population and commonly coexists with mental health and school learning issues. The vast majority of children affected have their first encounter for care of these issues within their primary care clinician’s practice—their “medical home”—but primary care clinicians may feel unprepared to meet the unique needs of these children. The ADHD Toolkit is designed to address these concerns, in tandem with the new AAP Clinical Practice Guideline for the Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Children and Adolescents.
The ADHD Toolkit provides guidance to enable and empower clinicians to create a medical home for children with ADHD in a step-by-step format, from preparing your practice, comprehensive assessment, “getting family buy-in,” and monitoring as a strategic plan. It also contains practical advice on obtaining reimbursement for each step necessary in the diagnostic and management process. More than two-thirds of this edition is brand-new, original content.
In the ADHD Toolkit are sample checklists, medication titration tools, and fillable assessment forms, including the popular Vanderbilt Assessment Scales by Dr. Mark Wolraich. These scales contain automated scoring that enable you to easily calculate results and create a digital record for your patients.
Acknowledging that primary care providers are often the most familiar clinician the child knows, have a history of trust, and are best positioned to manage the child’s ADHD over time, the authors of the ADHD toolkit have aimed to make ADHD management more feasible and achievable in the primary care setting.

About the Autism Toolkit, Caring for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Practical Resource Toolkit for Clinicians, 3rd Edition
This toolkit is intended as a practical complement to the 2019 AAP clinical report “Identification, Evaluation and Management of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.” It is designed to help clinicians incorporate the principles of the clinical report into daily practice and to become more comfortable in recognizing, diagnosing, and managing the health care needs of children, adolescents, and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), from early childhood through transition to adulthood.
The 3rd edition is expanded with new content that reflects new diagnostic criteria and culturally appropriate language. All content has been reviewed by members of the AAP Children With Special Needs Initiatives work group, as well as by AAP committees, councils, and sections, and by self-advocates and families of children and youths with ASD.
The authors of the Autism Toolkit recognize that medical and social views of ASD continue to change. In the 3rd edition, they have made efforts to be more inclusive of the diversity of abilities and cultural identity in children on the autism spectrum. They have also made updates to give the Toolkit a more strengths-based focus, and to acknowledge the agency of children and youth with ASD in managing their own health as much as possible.
The Autism Toolkit includes clinician tools and family handouts that cover a range of health care needs common to children with ASD, as well as guidance for working with families, establishing a medical home, and transitioning into adulthood. Spanish versions of family handouts will be available in late 2019.

About the Bright Futures Tool and Resource Kit, 2nd Edition
The Bright Futures Tool and Resource Kit, 2nd Edition, is the indispensable companion to the most current edition of the Bright Futures: Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children, and Adolescents. The Toolkit contains the forms and handouts that health care professionals, as well as patients and families, need to perform the well-child visits and make them a productive and collaborative partnership to ensure the health and well-being of infants, children, youths, and families. The second edition builds on the original Toolkit’s system of integrated forms to streamline the well-child visit. This resource facilitates enhanced surveillance of patient and family health and well-being with an expanded Anticipatory Guidance section, extensively revised documentation, and educational handouts written in plain language to be clear and concise to patients and families.
The Toolkit helps ensure individualized care: its forms allow parent and patient priorities and concerns to surface, giving opportunities for health care professionals to tailor care and anticipatory guidance.
The Toolkit helps provide standardized care that follows best practices of current pediatric care: all the forms and handouts are closely linked to Bright Futures visit components and priorities, making clinical activities and anticipatory guidance messages consistent throughout.
